Chapter 4

In this week’s reading of Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, We are in chapter 4 which the topic is ministry. Ministry is broken into many different sections within this chapter but I’m only going to talk about three. First, we have the ministry of listening. I’m going to breakdown each of these during this blog. It is first important to understand that God has made everyone in his perfect image. Bonhoeffer states that each member of the community is given his particular place, but this is no longer the place in which he can successfully assert himself, but the place where he can perform his best service. In the Christian community, everything depends upon whether each individual is an indispensable link in a chain. Only when even the smallest link is secured interlocked is the chain is unbreakable. A community that allows unemployed members to exist within it will perish because of them. “ (Bonhoeffer) It is so true that even when the small slink or the weakest link is locked into the rest of the chain it is unbreakable when it’s securely locked. this metaphor is saying that even when the person who is the most broken when we as Christians come around them and help them and make them stronger they become interlocked and secured within us and they will not perish and this chain is not breakable. As Christians, we must come around each other even when one is feels broken and cannot stand up on their own most come around them and stand up for them and help them stand. Bonhoeffer also brings up the great point that every single Christian community must really have that understanding that the strong need the weak in the weak needs the strong because without each other we would not survive. he says this “Every Christian community must realize that not only do the weak need the strong but also the strong cannot exist without the week. The elimination of the weak is the death of the fellowship.” (Bonhoeffer) Here Bonhoeffer is explaining that every single person in the Christian community is important and they need to be valued and even though they are strong or weak they are needed to be a strong community. because without the weak there is a failing community.

The ministry of listening is something that is important to the community of Christians. listening is a way to show that you care and value others. For example, God chose us that we must listen to his word, and just as we must listen to his word we must also listen to fellow Christians. Bonhoeffer explains this by saying, “just as the love of God begins with listening to his word, so does the beginning of love for the brethren in is learning to listen to them. It is God’s love for us that he gives he not only gives us his word but also leads us to his ear.” (Bonhoeffer). In this quote, Bonhoeffer is showing us that Jesus is our model, and he shows us that his love is there listening to his word therefore by listening to others we can show his love to them. is very important that we value the relationships with other Christians as well as non-Christians.
